Max van de Laar at work

About me Developer at heart, leader by choice.

I currently work as Fractional CTO & Technical Lead through my own company, Max van de Laar B.V., and I’m co-founding a stealth start-up. In my spare time I work on home automation and the renovation of our house. I’m based in Echt-Susteren, Limburg, the Netherlands.

But the most important thing for me is being a great parent to my daughter and son.

Head of Software Development

UTURN cloud migration

UTURN ran on several virtual private servers at a hosting provider. Their management was outsourced and they were sized for peak load, without autoscaling, which made hosting exceptionally expensive. After researching the alternatives, I moved the backend to Railway, the PostgreSQL databases to Neon, and the frontends to Vercel. The migration took a few months and was completed without major interruptions. The hosting costs of servers and databases dropped by about 70%, and releases went from one every two weeks, taking 45 minutes with several minutes of downtime, to continuous releases within minutes and without downtime. Every pull request got its own connected preview environment of database, backend, and frontends, so developers and product owners could test and review features separately, without getting in each other’s way on a shared test environment.

UTURN platform modernisation

The UTURN platform was more than seven years old and had been built without a clear architecture, with a lot of dead and unclear code and no tests. Java and Angular developers were expensive, so I chose one language across the stack: Node.js for the backend and React for the frontends, with React Native in mind for mobile, so that full-stack developers could work on everything. A big-bang rewrite was not an option, because the functionality large customers relied on had to stay intact. We therefore handed over responsibilities step by step, through queueing, to microservices written in Node.js, and rebuilt the first of three frontend applications in React in six to nine months, without major interruptions for customers. Along the way we reassessed the product and removed legacy choices. With smaller pieces of code and a team that speaks one language, we delivered features faster.

Head of Software Development

UTURN mobile app

The UTURN mobile app, business-critical for its carrier customers, was licensed from a digital agency that also owned it. It had not been updated for years, its SDK was so outdated that the app stores no longer approved it, and because every small change had to be paid for, it had fallen behind the web app in features. A rebuild was unavoidable. I decided to bring it in-house, so that new features no longer depended on an external party, and my team delivered the new app in React Native in about six months.

Lead Back-end Engineer

Drukwerkdeal

Drukwerkdeal migrated its legacy PHP codebase to AWS Lambda with NodeJS. I joined as Lead Back-end Engineer for the Finance team, led the transition, and coached the other developers to write NodeJS code with confidence and consistency.

Lead Front-end Engineer

Philips DCP

At Philips, I worked as Lead Front-end Engineer on the customer-facing side of a medical device. Due to NDA restrictions, I cannot share additional details, but the work demanded a strong focus on quality, reliability, and careful technical execution.

Founder

Homey Community Store

After my LG WebOS+ app for the Athom Homey platform was rejected from the official store, I worked with the community to create the Homey Community Store as an alternative app store. The platform was built with Vue 3 and AWS serverless architecture.

Lead Developer & Project Manager

Parkstad Inspecties

The customer wanted to rebuild legacy custom applications: a web app and a mobile app used by independent electrical inspectors to assess whether installations met legal standards. I worked in a team of four developers, managed the customer relationship, acted as project manager, and later became lead developer to help maintain quality while the product evolved.

Other activities

  • Citizen councilor Environment · GroenLinks (opens in a new tab), Echt-Susteren · Nov 2017 – Mar 2021

As a citizen councilor Environment, I reviewed plans before they reached the council, asking critical questions about zoning, sustainability, sewerage, and other local policy topics.

  • Ad-interim Chairman · GroenLinks (opens in a new tab), Echt-Susteren · Jun 2019 – Mar 2021

I temporarily filled the chairman role to help guide the local department through a smooth transition during its merger with the department of a neighbouring municipality, including highly emotional internal discussions about the department’s future.

  • Secretary · GroenLinks (opens in a new tab), Echt-Susteren · May 2018 – Mar 2021

As secretary, I prepared agendas and invites for department meetings, handled contact with outside media, and ensured the bylaws were followed during official processes.
